Cocamidopropy Betaine(CAB-30%)
Cocamidopropyl Betaine (commonly abbreviated CAPB or CAB) is an amphoteric surfactant derived from coconut fatty acids and dimethylaminopropylamine. It appears as a colorless to pale-yellow viscous liquid (typical commercial grade: CAB-30, active matter 30±2%) and is valued for mildness, rich fine foam, viscosity-building when combined with anionic surfactants, and good skin compatibility. CAPB is fully compatible with anionic, cationic and nonionic surfactants and is used extensively in personal care and household formulations.

Benefits of Cocamidopropy Betaine(CAB-30%)
Mildness
Reduces irritation from stronger anionic sulfates and improves skin feel — ideal for capb for hair and capb for skin products.
01
Foam Boosting & Stabilization
Creates rich, fine foam and improves foam stability in shampoos, hand washes and dish liquids.
02
Thickening & Viscosity Control
Significant thickening when formulated with anionic surfactants.
03
Broad Compatibility
Acts as a cloudy-point inhibitor and is compatible with most surfactant classes.
04
Conditioning & Antistatic
Provides conditioning and antistatic effects in personal care formulations.

Types of Cocamidopropy Betaine(CAB-30%)
Standard Cocamidopropyl Betaine
The most widely used form, synthesized by reacting coconut oil fatty acids with dimethylaminopropylamine and then oxidizing it to form a betaine structure. This version is prized for its excellent foam stability and viscosity-boosting capabilities.
Cationic Cocamidopropyl Betaine
A modified version where quaternary ammonium groups are introduced, giving the molecule a positive charge. This enables strong electrostatic interaction with negatively charged surfaces such as damaged hair, dry skin, or textile fibers.
Aspartic Acid Cocamidopropyl Betaine
A vegan-friendly variant synthesized using aspartic acid—an amino acid naturally found in plant proteins—combined with coconut fatty acids. This green chemistry approach enhances biodegradability and skin compatibility.
Hydrolyzed Cocamidopropyl Betaine
This advanced form undergoes controlled hydrolysis to break down the molecular structure into smaller, more bioavailable units. The process enhances penetration and absorption into the skin and hair shaft.
Ionene Cocamidopropyl Betaine
A specialized synthetic derivative engineered for enhanced stability and performance in demanding environments. Often referred to as "ionic" betaine, it features a polymerized ionene backbone combined with cocamidopropyl betaine functional groups.
Applications of Cocamidopropy Betaine(CAB-30%)
Personal care
Shampoos, baby shampoos, body washes, foaming cleansers, bubble baths, liquid soaps, facial cleansers.
Oral care & eye-care
Formulations where mildness needed (e.g., certain toothpaste, contact lens solutions) — follow regulatory guidance.
Household & industrial cleaners
Hand dishwashing liquids, laundry liquids, hard-surface cleaners and eco-friendly detergents.
Specialty uses
Foam boosters in disinfectants, wetting agents, pigment dispersants and textile auxiliaries.
How to Use Cocamidopropy Betaine(CAB-30%)
Handling
Always work in a well-ventilated area and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including nitrile gloves and safety goggles, to prevent skin or eye contact.
Dilution
CAPB is typically supplied as a concentrated liquid (30–35%). It can be diluted with water to the desired concentration, usually between 5% and 15% in final products.
Formulation
Add CAPB during the aqueous phase mixing stage. It is compatible with most water-soluble ingredients and can be combined with thickeners, preservatives, and fragrances.
pH Adjustment
Maintain final product pH between 5.5 and 7.0 for optimal stability and skin compatibility.
Precautions and Storage Guidelines
Skin Protection: Wear nitrile gloves when handling concentrated solutions, as prolonged exposure may cause mild irritation in sensitive individuals.
Ventilation: Use in well-ventilated areas to avoid vapor accumulation, especially during large-scale mixing.
Chemical Incompatibility: Do not mix with strong oxidizing agents or extreme pH solutions (below pH 4 or above pH 9), as this can lead to decomposition or unwanted reactions.
Temperature Sensitivity: Avoid exposure to temperatures above 50°C or freezing conditions, which may alter viscosity and stability.
Container Material: Store in sealed, airtight containers made of food-grade plastics (e.g., HDPE or PP). Do not use metal containers, as CAPB may cause corrosion over time.
Moisture Control: Keep containers tightly closed to prevent moisture absorption and microbial contamination.
Shelf Life: Typically 24 months when stored properly. Check for changes in color, odor, or clarity before use.
